WALL of Remarkable People

Welcome... Jim, Senior Manager for a tax consulting firm joins our wall with the desire be more and embrace vertical learning.

Jim’s view is changing every day due in large part to becoming a father. Creating new thoughts, beliefs and behaviors is not only contributing to his growth but to his colleagues and clients.

"Being a father has been life changing. When she smiles, my heart just melts. These days I tend to turn off the TV more and spend time with Catherine as I'm seeing what everyone means when they say, it flies by."

I now hold myself to a higher standard as I'm watching Catherine learn new things every day and I have such pride in her accomplishments, so I ask myself why I can't do the same thing. If a small child has such confidence and belief in their abilities and complete faith in the possibilities there is no reason why we as adults can’t move forward with the same purpose and meaning. I have even set aside time during the day to read regardless of schedule. I have found that this seemingly small change has given way to great benefit – I am able to relax and let go of stress, meet a personal goal and gain additional knowledge.

I have embarked on a new journey in the office, with responsibilities far different than I might have ever expected. With the thought of reaching for the next trapeze, an analogy from our SURVE retreat, I am able to embrace my fears, request clarity and seek guidance. In truth, I am looking forward to the opportunity, something I wouldn’t have been able to say last year at this time. As I watch my daughter reach for the next task to tackle it is a constant reminder that we all have great potential.

Welcome…Laura, Owner of a Coaching and Editing Business joins our wall with the decision to change her focus and determine what was blocking the path right in front of her.

When I learned about the Surve model of vertical learning, I was amazed at how much sense it made to me. I’ve experienced those Surve points that lift me into new ways of being, thinking, and acting many times in my life, but this was the first time I could identify the process of how it worked!

About two and half years ago, I was in a mountain of debt.  I had racked up some impressive credit card balances and was in a cycle of making partial payments each month, but then forced to use the credit card again because I had no cash left over to pay for necessities! The idea of a budget never seemed to get off the ground in my household.  I had begun a coaching practice and was surrounded with deep thinkers yet no one had a potential solution.  Weeks went by and the mountain of debt stayed, pretty much unmovable.

Then I attended a three-day seminar on money. The facilitator made a point there that spoke directly to me: If you want to get rid of your debt, focus on increasing your income. This was the Surve point for me! I realized I had been focusing so hard on my debt that I was simply getting more of it! Once I began to focus on my income, opportunities for increased earnings began to appear, and a radical change occurred.  I made an internal decision to shift or change my belief/focus and with that decision came growth for me personally and financially – a result I could never have believed was possible. My new focus on income had been cleverly channeled into new ways of thinking that brought about new actions and new results – I was truly seeing things differently.

Today my mountain of debt is considerably lowered (although not entirely gone), and my whole relationship with money and my money “blueprint” has changed.   I can identify many other times when I’ve reached a Surve point of learning that lifted me into new ways of thinking and have realized that a whole universe of opportunities open up each time I make that leap into a different way of being, thinking, and doing.

Welcome...Deanna - Executive VP for a career placement firm joins our wall for her desire to, and gift for, impacting others.

I consider myself blessed to be doing the work I do each day.  With the help of my wonderful network of friends, colleagues and family..I am better able to impact others.  As a career coach, I often meet people experiencing a tough time in their lives - typically just after losing a job.
I consider myself blessed to be doing the work I do each day.  With the help of my wonderful network of friends, colleagues and family..I am better able to impact others.  As a career coach, I often meet people experiencing a tough time in their lives - typically just after losing a job.

My approach is simple..be in the moment, be empathetic, listen not only to what is being said but what is not, stay upbeat, ask questions, challenge and/or coach (everyone is different) and when they are ready - connect them to people that can help them with their newly identified goals.

My favorite part of this job is watching the transformation and knowing that I was a part of the process.  I am privileged to see them begin a new career, new business or explore educational opportunities.  The end result is that they inevitably end up in a much happier place then where they began.
Welcome…Melinda – a VP for a financial services firm joins our wall with her      Real-Life Transformation

It seemed each day at the office was begun with some sort of sweeping change.  This type of environment had begun to wear thin on my centeredness and effectiveness in leading my team.  My initial reaction was to flee, take time off, abandon my post.  I reached out to Jim Blackburn who has coached me through a lifetime it seems of highs and lows.  He listened and listened and then said “why are you choosing to view this situation as you are”?  A fairly simple question but one that I needed to hear…  He suggested that I take a step back, almost hover over the situation, reaffirm my focus and purpose and then respond as the authentic individual I am.

Today, I am pleased to say that I have not only accepted the change in roles and responsibilities but have drafted a plan to make this an opportunity, a fertile ground for a new direction.  The idea being to create a better, healthier culture with accountability teams and deeper long-term relationships internally and with their clients.  The benefits of working with SURVE continue to propel me to new ventures that I would never have believed I could be a part of creating.
